NAVIGATION DATA - is information needed for the position and path definition of an
aircraft. This includes, but is not limited to: waypoints, airports and runways, routes and
procedures, navaids, and landing system infrastructure. It excludes terrain, obstacle,
and cultural data (e.g. geopolitical borders, water features, etc.) .
NAVIGATION FUNCTION [ICAO Doc 9613] - The detailed capability of the navigation
system (such as the execution of leg transitions, parallel offset capabilities, holding
patterns, navigation databases) required to meet the airspace concept.
Note: Navigational functional requirements are one of the drivers for the selection of a
particular navigation specification. Navigation functionalities (functional requirements) for
each navigation specification can be found in Volume II, Parts B and C.
NAVIGATION SPECIFICATION [ICAO Doc 9613] - A set of aircraft and aircrew
requirements needed to support Performance-based Navigation operations within a
defined airspace. There are two kinds of navigation specification:
RNAV specification - A navigation specification based on area navigation that
does not include the requirement for on-board performance monitoring and
alerting, designated by the prefix RNAV (e.g ., RNAV 5 or RNAV 1).
RNP specification - A navigation specification based on area navigation that
includes the requirement for on-board performance monitoring and alerting,
designated by the prefix RNP (e.g., RNP 4 or RNP APCH).
Note: Volume II of this manual [Doc 9613] contains detailed guidance on
NON-RNAV PROCEDURE - A generic term for procedures designed for use with
ground-based navaids and conventional navigation equipment.
Note: Even though the procedures are flown by RNAV equipped aircraft, non-RNAV
procedures were not originally designed in direct support of these equipment types.
NOTAM [ICAO Annex 15] - A notice distributed by means of telecommunication
containing information concerning the establishment, condition or change in any
aeronautical facility, service, procedure or hazard, the timely knowledge of which is
essential to personnel concerned with flight operations.
OBSTACLE [DO-200B/ED-76A] - All fixed (whether temporary or permanent) and
mobile objects or parts thereof that:
Are located on an area intended for the surface movement of aircraft;
Extend above a defined surface intended to protect aircraft in flight; and,
Stand outside those defined surfaces and that have been assessed as being a
hazard to air navigation.
ORIGINATE/ORIGINATION [DO-200B/ED-76A] - The process of creating a data
element or amending the value of an existing data element.
ORIGINATOR (OF DATA) [DO-200B/ED-76A] - The first organization in an
aeronautical data chain that accepts responsibility for the data. For example, a State or
DO-200B/ED-76A compliant organization.
ORTHOMETRIC HEIGHT [ICAO Annex 15] - Height of a point related to the geoid,
generally presented as an MSL elevation.
PATH AND TERMINATOR (“PATH TERMINATOR”) [ICAO Doc 8168]. A two-letter
code, which defines a specific type of flight path along a segment of a procedure and a
