MINIMUM PERFORMANCE SPECIFICATIONS UNDER ENVIRONMENTAL TEST
The environmental tests and performance specifications described in this chapter
provide a laboratory means of determining the overall performance characteristics of
the ELT system under conditions representative of those which may be encountered
in actual operation.
Unless otherwise specified, the test procedures applicable to the determination of ELT
system performance under environmental test conditions are contained in document
EUROCAE ED-14G/RTCA DO-160G, ”Environmental Conditions and Test Procedures
for Airborne Equipment”. W here this applies, reference is made to the relevant section
Some of the environmental tests contained in this chapter do not have to be
performed unless the manufacturer wishes to qualify the ELT system for that particular
environmental condition. These tests are identified by the word “Optional”. If the
manufacturer wishes to qualify the ELT system to these additional environmental
conditions, then these "Optional" tests shall be performed.
Some of the test procedures required by this chapter are additional to, or different
from, those specified in ED-14G/DO-160G. In these cases, the test procedures are
described and marked "(SPECIAL)".
Individual approval authorities may require that some of the tests in this chapter
be performed at a Cospas-Sarsat approved test facility in order to obtain a
Cospas-Sarsat "type approval".
b. In addition, the Cospas-Sarsat approved test facility may conduct a qualitative
performance test of the ELT by transmitting to selected Cospas-Sarsat
satellites; this may require the submission of a second test unit.
Although the tests in this chapter are compatible with those specified in C/S
T.007 for first generation ELT or C/S T.021 for second generation ELT, some of
the following test procedures and conditions are more rigorous than the
Cospas-Sarsat equivalents and ELTs must be tested to the standards specified
in this Minimum Operational Performance Specification.
ELT(AD) in ADFR
ELT(AD) embedded in ADFR are also required to meet the requirements of ED-112A
section 3, in particular the sequence of test § 3-1.8.1.a. III or ED-155 section 3, in
particular the sequence of tests described in § 2-1.14.3.
Specific environmental requirements pertaining to the ELT system and its components
are defined within this section; these include Temperature and Altitude ranges,
Waterproofness requirements, Immersion requirements and Fire Resistance. A list of
the required environmental tests and whether they are mandatory or optional and
details of the standards to be applied can be found in TABLE 4-1. Tests are grouped
into two parts Group A and Group B. Group A tests may be performed in any order or
combination and more than one test unit may be used. Group B tests must be
performed on a single unit in the order shown. Environmental test procedures for
ELT(DT)s without crash survivability are defined in § 4.6.
